  Fruits That Cause Heartburn?

Heartburn can also be caused by the food we intake. Fruits are among the leading foods which contribute to the cause or aggravate the condition of a patient suffering from heartburn. However, not all fruits have the same negative effect. Only those which contain high levels of acids are to be avoided.

Since the stomach produces natural gastric acids to aid in the digestion process, increasing their levels will irritate the stomach and lead to acid reflux. Reflux usually happens at the moment the lower esophageal sphincter fails to function properly, allowing the acids to flow back into the esophagus. To prevent heartburn, here are the types of fruits you might want to avoid.

tomatoes bad for acid refluxTomatoes

The tomato fruit and a lot of other tomato products such as tomato sauce, juice and ketchup should be totally avoided if you have an existing condition of heartburn or you are prone to experiencing one.

The tomato has a high level of acidity which adds up to the gastric acids in your stomach the moment you eat it.

Unripe Bananas

Sweet and fully ripe bananas are known to help relieve acid reflux, and thus eliminate heartburn. However, eating unripe bananas will only leave you regretful. These have high levels of ph that can irritate your stomach, increase the pain and aggravate the symptoms of heartburn.

Citrus Fruits

Oranges, limes, pineapples, lemons, and other citric fruits you can think of, can definitely cause acid reflux, leading to heartburn. These are the types with the highest levels of acids. Any sour tasting fruit can be considered acidic and therefore must be avoided. Turning them into other forms such as juices, will not help much and will generally have the same negative effect.

Though all of these are facts, it doesn’t mean that you should stop eating fruits. Heartburn can only be triggered if you consume large amounts of the fruits mentioned above. If some of these are already part of your daily diet, you should consider eating smaller amounts, so as to prevent heartburn. You should also know that although you’ve lessened or totally avoided them, heartburn can still be triggered by a lot of other factors. Try other fruits which helps neutralize gastric acids such as melons and ripe bananas, or those which have the least levels of acid such as berries. Also, avoid eating foods that can cause heartburn such as chocolates, fatty products, caffeinated drinks and alcohol.

Our health is dependent upon a lot of factors, but mostly on the food that we eat. Practicing a healthy eating habit, and maintaining a healthy diet accompanied by a healthy lifestyle is the surest and most effective way of preventing diseases and unwanted symptoms.
