It’s enough already that you are suffering from one
condition or disease but if two strikes you then that would be something to worry about. This is why some
doctors took the liberty to see if they can cure two health conditions instead of one with the use of one
medication.
In this video, asthma patient Matthew Leitz talks about his condition, “I would say about once a month, I have
something serious enough to cause an asthma attack,” Leitz stated “Other than that, it’s a lot of wheezing and
coughing,” he added. Because of this he never goes out without his inhaler nearby. However, inhalers are
not only one part of the problem. It has been proven that at least 1 out of 3 people experience the same problem
that Leitz has. According to Dr. John Mastronarde, M.D from Ohio State
University Medical Center,“There are a proportion of patients who for whatever reason have acid in their
stomachs but they don’t feel it. It doesn’t hurt, we don’t really understand that but we know it exists,”
he explained.
With this underlying
condition, doctors thought of an idea to cure two conditions with the help of one medication. It’s like hitting
two birds with one stone. So researchers like Dr. Mastronarde came up with an experiment where they gave people
with asthma medications that cure acid reflux. However, after three years of study, it has been proven that
patients with this condition were not as responsive to the drug as the doctors thought it would be. This video
will show Dr. Mastronarde explain why such experiment was not successful.
The goal of this experiment
was to keep doctors from over medicating patients with asthma and acid reflux. As for
patients, it would be a good idea to pay for one medication that can cure both.
If you are suffering from
asthma, it could be a difficult situation to have but if you also suffer from acid reflux then it’s a whole new
level. It would be difficult to manage both conditions at the same time but if doctors can find a cure for that
then why not? For more information, watch this video.
